At Hypercontext, we’re pretty proud of our productivity in team meetings. One of the reasons our weekly catch-ups are so effective is because we always start our meetings way off topic. At the top of every agenda we have an icebreaker question, or as we like to call it, “Fun question of the week.” 👉
It sounds simple, and it is. The five minutes we spend getting to know our team members every week energizes everyone in the room, helps everyone feel comfortable having their voice heard and sets all of us up for a super productive team meeting.
Here are our 10 favourite meeting icebreakers that we’ve used to kick off our discussions:
1. You’re stranded on a desert island. What’s the one thing you bring to keep you occupied?
Good for learning about your team’s interests and hobbies outside of work.
Hypernauts said: The complete works of Shakespeare, journal, pet, surfboard, and yoga mat.
2. What’s one thing your co-workers don’t know about you?
Good for rinsing and repeating. You’ll find your team members have tons of hidden talents!
Hypernauts said: I…“was a former gymnast,” “was an All State Jazz singer,”and “never finished 10th grade.”
3. What’s your favorite fruit?
Good for the next time you place an order for the office fruit bowl.
Hypernauts said: Grapes, apples, mango and strawberries.
4. What’s one cuisine you could live without?
Good for catering preferences for office lunches and team socials (pun intended).
Hypernauts said: Italian (almost unanimously).
5. What’s your favourite restaurant in ____ city?
Good for welcoming new-to-the-city team members and spreading the travel bug.

6. What’s the worst weather you’ve ever been caught in?
Good for learning how your team copes in tough situations.

Good for finding secret skills within your team, and hopefully- no one answers with their current job!
